The work:

Inspired by a poem written on the walls of the Statue of Liberty by an anonymous Italian immigrant, this piece depicts the ecological anxiety associated with the rise (and fall) of the neoliberal US empire. What is destroyed by settler colonialism, the foundation of the US empire? Who is left behind and expected to pick up the pieces as the empire continues to exract from the environment and labor of its people? What are the possibilities left in its wake? This 3-piece porcelain set includes a lamp torch, half of the Statue of Liberty's head with the partial poem of inspiration inscribed within, and a base with the poem continued onto it.

Dimensions:

12" x 7" x 6"

The artist:

Angelique De Castro (b. 1994) is a mostly self-taught artist based in Brooklyn, NY. Through ceramic sculpture, 3D animation, and new media, De Castro creates characters and stories whose mythologies are shaped by the cross-sections of labor politics, queer/trans embodiment, and disobedient cultural narratives. They have exhibited work at Keepsake Gallery, The Other Art Fair, and SaveArtSpace (forthcoming). They have also been selected to exhibit in shows curated by The Here and There Collective, Yarrow Lazer-Smith, and Naomi Basu. She was an artist-in-residence at the Asian American Art Alliance in 2020. Her work has also been mentioned in The New York Times and featured in Google Arts and Culture.
