The work:

This piece is a part of a series of work entitled “gatekeepin”. This series is an ode to Black culture across the African diaspora. The Sankofa motif appears on gates, and other architectural forms across Africa, the Caribbean, and North America, making apparent the cultural ties that bind Black people and Black communities across the world. The Sankofa is a Ghanaian Adinkra symbol that represents the Akan proverb, "Se wo were fi na wosan kofa a yenkyiri," meaning, "It is not taboo to go back for what you forgot (or left behind)”. Each piece in the series includes different representations of the Sankofa, as witnessed during my travels across the world.

Dimensions:

16.5 x 10" x 10"

The artist:

fayola via (fy-o-la) fair is a Black, queeribbean non-binary educator, community organizer and artist from Jamaica, Queens who works to center and uplift Blackness in all iterations- particularly considering Black histories, Black communities, and Black struggles for freedom and liberation. Her work in ceramics allows them to fully imagine and create new physical realities. This reflects their interest in working to imagine a more free and just world, both as an artist and an educator.
