Artshack Artist in Residence
presents Christian Moses, Memory as Resistance
Opening Reception July 20th, from 4:00 to 6:00 pm
Artshack is pleased to announce the opening of a new exhibition by Brooklyn-native artist Christian Moses. Opening on July 20th, this exhibition invites viewers to explore a unique dialogue between memory, identity, and the evolving urban landscape of New York City.
Moses’ work addresses themes of gentrification, cultural erasure, and resistance. His latest series examines the concept of the "souvenir cup," considering what icons define a city’s character and who decides which historical aspects are preserved. By incorporating imagery from underground New York movements—such as gold jewelry, Pelle Pelle jackets, and BB Simon belts—Moses creates pieces that honor and preserve the city's cultural heritage amidst its ongoing transformation.
The exhibition features work that employs handbuilding techniques, highlighted by a range of glazing methods including underglaze, overglaze decals, and gold lusters. Through these methods, Moses captures the nostalgia, intimacy, and grief felt by Black and Brown native New Yorkers as they witness the loss of familiar community spaces.
As part of his residency, Christian Moses will lead a visual storytelling workshop during Community Day, focused on Black American tradition and history in clay, inviting community members to contribute to a collective vessel that symbolizes unity and shared history.
