In “Biomineral Topographies,”Emily Loughlin’s hand-built ceramic structures utilize mycelium, and fiber art to explore the symbiotic relationship between geology and ecology. Emily is an interdisciplinary artist living in Brooklyn, NY, where she draws inspiration from research of the longest-living organisms, mapmaking, and geologic history. The works in this show were developed in residency at Artshack and through a long-term residency with Friends of Pando, an advocacy and stewardship organization.
Originally from Pennsylvania, Emily Loughlin is a multi-media artist whose primary medium is ceramic sculpture. She manipulates the longevity of her sculptures by adjusting firing temperature, shifting between geology and biology, changing topographies and landscapes between raw clay and bisque firing, while organic forms become permanent through high-fire vitrification.
