Angelique De Castro
This body of work represents the artist’s exploration of character design incorporating Filipinx pop culture, mythology, and aesthetics. The resulting sculptures embody the mischievous, chaotic neutral characterizations of dwende– enchanted humanoid creatures that typically inhabit homes. When these ceramic dwende are invited to your home, they possess a watchful presence. Are they scheming to take your keys? Eavesdropping? Just lounging about idly in the warmth of your shared presence? Incarnated in clay, these characters are mini monuments of mankind’s relationship with the supernatural.
Marie Leocadie
Born in France to a Parisian family and nurtured in the vibrant cultural scene of Montreal, Canada, Marie Leocadie brings a unique blend of international influences to the clay community.
Working primarily with porcelain on the wheel, Marie infuses each piece with a sense of playfulness, personality, spontaneity and wonder. Her signature style includes transforming traditional shapes into colorful characters reflecting different facets of her identity. She’s also known for experimenting with surface designs such as sgraffito and working with altered forms.
Guided by technique, she challenges the notion that proess of making art must be neat and linear and that outcomes must adhere to strict standards of refinement, opting instead to celebrate the beauty of change, possibilities, expression and the unknown.
