Alex Baren is a ceramicist whose work is driven by a deep fascination with ancient vessels and traditional ceramic techniques. His pieces connect sculpture and utility, driven by the belief that art can serve an everyday purpose. He was born and raised in New York and in addition to ceramics explores other tactile arts including block printing and painting. When not at the studio, he works at the International Rescue Committee, a humanitarian nonprofit, and lives in Brooklyn.
🏺
This collection of work builds on Alex’s interest in traditional and classical forms and his growing appreciation for organic shapes and the expressive nature of clay; This mixing of modernity with tradition, precision with spontaneity, enables him to express himself while connecting with the very human history of ceramics. In this collection, a carved drinking bowl inspired by an opening flower bud feels at home alongside a glossy-glazed amphora. These cups and vessels are meant to invoke the human connections between organic, earthly textures and tradition, a practical and powerful way to integrate wares into personal spaces.
